Unbelievable potential data breach in the UK:

…the names, the addresses and the dates of birth of every child in the country are sitting on two computer discs that are apparently lost in the post, and the bank account details and National Insurance numbers of 10 million parents…

This is just staggering - UK families are “urged to monitor their bank accounts”.

Instead of sticking a few secure APIs onto the HM Revenue & Customs data they courier around database backups where access to the data cannot never be logged or traced. It would seem IT departments have a long way to go to evolve their thinking…

At least according to Nielsen/NetRatings Facebook has surpassed MySpace in the UK with over 6.5 million users - 541% growth since Dec ‘06.

At the Facebook Developer Garage in London a few weeks ago Facebook’s VP of Product Development (Chamath Palihapitiya) mentioned they had 5.2 million UK users so I suspect the real total is somewhere in between but that growth rate is phenomenal. Almost as interesting were some other stats Palihapitiya presented - IIRC he mentioned a 50% daily return rate with each user burning through over 1500 page views a month…

Bad head day! We’re all feeling worn out so we pile into the minivan with my sister and the kids and go on a tour. We stop off at Brighton beach to admire the multi-colored beach boxes (little huts on the edge of the beach that are supposedly worth > $30,000 each!) and then head down to the pier to absorb the views of the city. A couple of photos later we’re onto Fitzroy St. which is kinda a trendyish cafe strip. The kids are getting restless though so home it is, followed by a traditional Aussie barbque. Ah yes, now I remember why I like this country! Sean is looking a bit ropey though…

Boxes!
