Digiweb Metro 3Mbps wireless broadband and voice calls

Metro (more here) is a service to watch, and maybe even try if you’re brave. It’s a great entry to the market, even if it only forces the DSL providers to improve their basic packages to match.

However, my unsucessful experiences trying Irish Broadband’s services from home (in Dublin 4) lead me to guess that this wireless service will not work for everyone. The big questions about line of sight requirements, factors that may impact actual up/down bandwidth and lag are not addressed in their FAQ. Glaring omissions like this usually make me suspicious.

Digiweb, you’ll save yourselves and prospective customers a lot of wasted time and money if you put more information about your service onto your website.

  1. magnet (www.http://magnet.ie/ ) are another company offering quite a large pipe (4Mb) into the house, with additional digital tv and phone. i think it’s all delivered over fibre. but like digiweb you have to call them to see if your area is eligable with no info on how to increase your location’s position on the rollout list, though they offer a rough area of coverage.

    only offered here (from http://magnet.ie/services/fibre-to-the-home.aspx )

    * Grange/Clongriffin
    * Northern Cross
    * Beacon South Quarter
    * Chancery Lane
    * Balgriffin Park

    Meath

    * Dunboyne Castle

    Laois

    * Fairgreen Village, Portlaoise

  3. Hey Aman,
    I’d looked at their site a few weeks back - I suspect a lot of the content on that site is “forward looking”. Looks like they are using ADSL2+ though it’ll be a while before they roll out to everyone - http://www.magnetnetworks.com/news/21-09-05.aspx

    Still I can’t see a real digital tv service running well over anything less than a fiber network like the FTTH one they are also laying - 7 locations in the whole country, I won’t hold my breath.
